Not really a house....
But it certainly was home to a lot of the French elite during incarceration.
The Chateau D'If (pronounced Deef) was constructed by France's Francois I. Construction began in 1524 and continued until 1531. Originally it was built as a defensive fortress for Mersailles. The location and severety of the fortress created an ideal prison for political captives. It was made famous in Alexander Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo, one of my favorite books!
